One more help me buy a hardtail thread
So I’m looking for a hardtail for some bikepacking and ultra stuff. Problem is a lot of the rides I’d be doing have a fair bit of flat, so I do think wanna be limited to a tiny chainring. Is there anything in the market with the following features?
Ive looked at the new ritchey 29er but the geo seems a little antiquated, fairlight holt is limited chainring clearance, sour pasta party has a rear flat mount brake for some reason. Anybody know the chainring on an Esker Hayduke? Last edited by fredd; 05-04-2024 at 12:19 PM. |

I think many of the newer hardtails are limited at 30-32t 1x rings given the increased hub spacing and wider chain stay yokes to fit bigger tires. With that said, I'm wondering if a Surly krampus or karate monkey could work (if you are ok with somewhat midschool geo and the weight) if you fit a double crankset with a larger chainring only on the outer side.

Surly is an option I haven’t looked at.
Salsa cutthroat has too short reach for me. Might see what Carver or Waltly can do for me. |

Max ring not listed, but Nick is using 3D printed yokes, so it might allow bigger than normal sizes. Or he does custom as well. If you’re open to aluminum, a Chisel should take 36t. Nit sure about 38. |

And going to Ti, Turner Nitrous might work. Listed as 38t round.

I don’t know your budget but the hard tail I want is either a 44 or a Coconino. I’d guess your check list should be easy for either builder.

Probably 34t.
I have an Esker Japhy and its a great bike, I never felt limited on flat terrain. A 34/10 gets you nearly 30mph @ 90rpm - and you could go a bit more if you used an e-13 cassette with a 9t. If you're looking for a longish medium I was thinking about selling mine. |

Niner Sir9 is listed at 36t clearance. But I’m wondering if you can play with the EBB to get a bigger chainring in there.
I had the prior version. Loved the 853 tubes. |

Agreed with those that say you really don’t need a 38 tooth. Especially with 2.4” tires, you’re pushing a big gear on a 34x10 or even one cog larger - enough for 30 mph at 90 rpm.
