Do you sew up the holes in your socks?
I have quite a number of (DeFeet) socks with a hole in the toes.
Everything else is fine, even the ankle cuff elasticity. I asked DeFeet years ago if the socks themselves are recyclable since they are made from recycled plastic fibers but they said no. Just seems a shame to add a bunch of socks to landfill. |

Nooooooo!! Hole in a sock = that pair is thrown away.
Socks are too cheap to mess with and they *never* feel the same if repaired. Gary Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I don't, but will say that I purchased 3 pairs of wool Rapha socks 6 months ago - also purchased 3 pairs of smartwool socks at the same time (casual wear for both) and the Rapha's are junk compared to the Smartwool. Holes in random places and worn thin on the soles.

If you're willing to part it out (remove foot and cut off toe section) I'd be willing to buy the heel.

I try to buy multiples of the same sock. Then I just get rid of them one at a time when they get to a state if not being wearable.
In terms of reuse, my daughter is collecting old socks at our house to make a socktapus doll with her grandmother. Last edited by pdonk; 05-02-2024 at 08:12 AM. Reason: typos - big fingers cell phone.... |

Put them in your garage to clean chain! Put two over each hand or if a thick sock, one will do. Clean your bike with the clean ones, then they are used on the greasy, dirty areas, like the chain.

Holey sock = shoe cover
I end up using them as shoe covers for the cooler months…if aesthetics are troubling, they also make good “mid layers” - over the shoes/under heavier booties - for the very cold months.

Moved to General Discussion.
Thank goodness too, I was about to ban you for trying to sell used socks with holes in them. Here seems like a great place to sing the praises of Darn Tough socks. Lifetime guarantee. They would send you a new pair if that happened.

Speaking of Darn Tough, I wanted to share my experience. I also took advantage of the lifetime warranty a few years ago, and my results have been mixed. Their cushioned socks are excellent, I currently own a range of lengths for casual and snow sports. However, the lifestyle socks that aren't cushioned wear out prematurely in the ankle and heel and have odd sizing, more like pantyhose than traditional socks. While there was a lot of back and forth, and the cost of return shipping added up, the warranty does hold up.

I like to fix things. On bike socks though, I'd be worried that darning the toe would make a spot where I'd get a blister on long rides.

This is the way.

Yes. It is easy to do and has made quality socks last much longer. Usually my holes are caused by hitting something, though, and not a toe poking out. usually can’t even tell where it was fixed.
